Symbiosis

The leading theme in the work by Studio Rolf.fr is the concept of symbiosis. In nature symbiosis manifests itself in many different ways. Varying from a harmonious co-existence to a form of parasitizing. In the case of Rolf.fr's work this is translated in the combining, mixing or intersecting of objects, elements and parts and by applying different materials and have them interact with each other visually and/or technically. Besides playing with contrasts, the fascination for bringing to surface the interior and the developing and manipulating of production processes play an important role in the design methodology as a whole. Although these technical processes in general come about in a rational manner they have to allways result in a (irrational) poetic power. Products don't only derive value and meaning from their usage and a practical point of view but also to a great extend from that poetic expressiveness. The design process is based on a logical and pragmatical development of the concept.

Transformation

There is a category of traditional furniture that is nor antique nor really valuable. That traditional furniture is unwanted by younger generations but often inherited when older people pass away. This furniture has a emotional value, but still we wouldn't like to have it in our interiors. By transforming them they can keep the emotional value and gain a place in our living space.

Furniture & Architecture

There are a lot of parallels between Rolf‘s work as an architect (www.zecc.nl) and the furniture transformation. Rolf transformed old buildings into new ones, useless ones in useful ones, old-fashioned ones into contemporary ones. Buildings like furniture can get a new span of life by transformation.

The tables are made of slices from a typical massive Henry Deux table (also known as style "Mechelse"). The ornaments of the original table are transformed into a perforated pattern.

The reconstruction of an old building in Rotterdam transforming it into my studio with house has resulted in an architectural spectacle in which has been experimented with space and time. The new metal windowframes sticking out in some spots form a sharp contrast with the existing but freshly painted black facade and it's old windows that have been painted black as well. More
